Get Moving in May with National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Physical activity is key to maintaining health and well-being. During the month of May, we challenge all adults to get 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

INVIVO Wellness is supporting the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition in honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

Did you know that regular physical activity increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life?

Physical activity also reduces your risk for high blood pressure, and heart disease, and improves mental health and some types of cancer. In addition, it can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while boosting energy levels and overall well-being. Yet in the U.S. nearly 80% of adults don’t get the recommended amount of physical activity.

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults:

• Aim for 150 minutes or 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes things like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, and yard work.

• Perform muscle-strengthening activities – like lifting weights or using exercise bands – at least 2 days a week. Always consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen.

Physical activity is for everyone. No matter your level of fitness, you can find activities that work for you. Together, let’s rise to the challenge and get more active during the month of May!

Check out the list of local activities to do around Milwaukee.

1. Go for a bike ride. Riding a bicycle is good for your heart, and helps to lower blood pressure and blood sugar. Don’t have a bike?  Rent a bike or 3-bike from Bublrbikes. There are over 60 stations located in the City of Milwaukee.

2. Hike the Milwaukee River Greenway a nearly 8-mile, 878-acre section of the Milwaukee River that begins at the former North Avenue Dam and ends at Silver Spring Drive. It offers 28 miles of hiking, biking, and water trails.

3. Take a walk along the Milwaukee Riverwalk. The 3.7-mile Milwaukee River Walk winds through the city, connecting three distinct riverfront neighborhoods – the Historic Third Ward, Downtown, and Beerline B.

4. Visit Milwaukee County Parks. Get active on the trails, playgrounds, golf courses, beaches, and more. Discover everything the parks system offers and #MKEthemost of your parks.

5. Paddle on the Milwaukee River on a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. Rent from a locally owned and operated company that supports its community.
