Yoga Therapy
What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga Therapy uses the ancient science of yoga to enhance the health and wellness of the person at all levels: physical, emotional and spiritual. It is applicable to groups or individuals with specific health challenges or injuries, those who are going through life changes or those who are simply striving for optimal health.
Experience a Transformative Wellness Journey
In Yoga Therapy, you will be encouraged to accept and embrace the body, mind, and spirit in present moment awareness. Not remembering a body, mind, or spirit from the past nor wishing for some future goal, but accepting where they are at “right now” and remembering the wholeness that is their divine nature.
Yoga Therapy places equal emphasis on the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the practice, one-third of the session will be spent in the body, one-third working with the mind and emotions, and one-third connecting with the spirit. By placing equal emphasis on all three aspects of the yoga practice, students find more balance on the mat that they can then bring with them off the mat and into their life.
Whether you have been diagnosed with cancer, are going through a life transition, or are dealing with symptoms of chronic illness like Crohn’s Disease or Rheumatoid Arthritis, the broader approach of Yoga Therapy will show you that you are not defined by your diagnosis and symptoms.
Relief from symptoms is just one aspect of the healing process, a multifaceted journey focused on mobilizing the individual’s progress toward greater health and well being.
Yoga Therapy is not intended to be a substitute for modern medicine but is a complementary and alternative method that enhances the healing process.

Do you have an issue with your shoulders or back that you want to fix? Is your sciatica or hip acting up on you?
Private yoga appointments work best when they are tailored to fit your needs. You will leave the appointment with a program/video that you can continue working with on your own. A private yoga appointment can either help you to begin your own yoga practice, keep you motivated with your current practice or work on a specific issue.
Yoga Therapy sessions with Ricky Heldt start with an initial assessment (phone conversation) and three (3) one-hour yoga therapy sessions that focus on your needs. Videos from those three yoga therapy sessions will be provided so you may continue to practice. Ricky provides referrals to continue your journey of healing. These may include one-on-one yoga private classes, group yoga classes, or other referral services.

A new student to my yoga classes can expect a balanced class including body scans/awareness, breath, energy-body work (mudras/chakras), core work, a theme of some sort and definitely meditation. A private yoga or yoga therapy client can expect the same – just catered specifically to their special needs/injury/illness.

What should I expect during my yoga therapy appointment?
The first session with a client begins with a review of their personal history form, which they fill out before the appointment. This intake form also asks clients what they would like to achieve in yoga therapy—what they hope to get out of it.
Assessment is a key component in the yoga therapy session. It’s a process of inquiry to help us both discover the underlying issues they’re dealing with, and how yoga therapy can serve them.
Check-in
Review with the client how they’re feeling right now in the session and what may have changed.
The Practice
We explore yoga postures that may work well for the client given their unique history and needs. Hands-on touch is used only with permission, and only to direct awareness, not to move the body.
Integration
We might offer the client a moment to focus on an affirmation or intention. Maybe we’ll do a specific mudra or hand gesture as a way to seal in the practice.
Homework
If a client is willing to practice at home, we’ll give them a small homework assignment that builds on what they’ve done in the session.
